Industrial refrigeration systems manufacturer GEA has supplied an ammonia (R171) system with a total cooling capacity of 3MW (853TR) to the Thialf ice stadium in Heerenveen, the Netherlands. The new ammonia brine system was developed in collaboration with the Thialf technicians and replaced the previous R507 brine system. one.
Two of the rinks in the stadium use -18°C (0°F) brine for cooling the ice while three others utilize -15°C (5°F) brine. The stadium has approximately 11,000m2 (118,403ft2) of ice surface. The installation consists of two GEA screw compressor-driven chillers and two GEA piston-driven chillers, each equipped with air- and water-cooled condensers. Heat recovered from the water-cooled oil condensers and desuperheaters is used to produce warm water.
