Vitalis CO2 Heat Pump Cuts Emissions at Canadian University by 350 Tonnes

The University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBC), located in Kelowna, Canada, reduced its CO2 emissions by 350 metric tons after installing an air-source CO2 (R744) heat pump manufactured by Vitalis. The 1.5MW (426TR) heat pump connects to UBC’s district energy network and provides heating and cooling. The reduction came over a period of nine months, with the university noting that in a cold year emissions could be cut by up to 800 metric tons.

Emergent Cold LatAm Uses CO2 Refrigeration System for New Blast-Freezing Tunnels in Chilean Cold Storage Facility

Emergent Cold LatAm has added two new blast-freezing tunnels, which use a CO2 refrigeration system, to its cold storage facility in San Antonio, Chile. The new tunnels are designed to support food manufacturers in the area, with Emergent Cold LatAm stating that they will enable producers to process more than 10,500 tons of frozen food annually. The company operates 110 cold storage warehouses in 11 Latin American countries.

PrimaFrio Trials Semi-Trailer Liquid Nitrogen Refrigeration System

Spanish logistics company PrimaFrio has completed trials of a new liquid nitrogen (R728) refrigeration system for semi-trailers. The refrigeration system is powered by solar panels from Apollo-Power with a capacity of 2.48kW. The combined use of nitrogen and solar panels reduced emissions by 40 tons of CO2e (CO2 equivalent) per year compared to a diesel-powered transport refrigeration unit using a synthetic refrigerant.

Swegon Releases New R290 Commercial Heat Pump

Swedish HVAC&R systems manufacturer Swegon has released the Epsilon Zero, a new propane (R290) heat pump for domestic hot water production, space heating and comfort cooling. The air-source Epsilon Zero is available as a heating-only or reversible model with between 14 and 45kW (3.9–12.7TR) of capacity. Swegon says the heat pump, with water leaving temperatures of 75°C (167°F), is designed as a boiler replacement in multi-family homes (heating only) with the reversible model a fit for non-residential buildings, including restaurants, small offices and fitness facilities.

Trane Announces New Propane Deep Freezing Chiller

Trane has announced the Aries N Deep Freezing Chiller, a propane unit designed for industrial refrigeration applications. The lineup offers between 88 and249kW (25–70.8TR) of cooling capacity with leaving glycol temperatures between –12 and –30°C (10 to –22°F). The chiller can operate in ambient conditions between –22 and 46°C (–4 and 114°F) and features an optional heat recovery system.
