The SCC’s goal is to unify the emerging industry’s measurements and to better promote the accomplishments of its companies.

Exergyn, Magnotherm and Pascal, three companies working on cooling and heating technologies that use solid materials rather than refrigerants, have teamed up to launch the Solid Cooling Coalition (SCC).

The three companies made the announcement at Chillventa 2026, which is being held in Nuremberg from October 13 to 15. The SCC says its goal is to “work together to move the cooling industry from a one-size-fits-all reliance on vapor compression toward next-generation high-efficiency solid cooling systems.”

Exergyn, Magnotherm and Pascal have developed products that produce cooling and heating via forces or fields applied to solid materials: This includes a nickel-titanium blend called nitinol (Exergyn), lanthanum-iron-silicon (Magnotherm) and metal–halide perovskites (Pascal). The use of solid materials in cooling and heating is not new, but in recent years there has been renewed interest in the technology from investors as the HVAC&R industry begins to phase out the use of HFC refrigerants.

The coalition aims to capitalize on this momentum. It has laid out five strategic priorities designed to build consensus in the industry and accelerate the adoption of solid cooling and heating technologies:

  1. Act as a single source of trustworthy information by compiling and presenting the best available information on caloric cooling

  2. Enforce consistent performance metrics and reporting standards across calorics academia and its industry

  3. Advocate for new cooling performance standards that are technology agnostic and fit-for-purpose

  4. Define a precise commercialization roadmap with milestones tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities of caloric cooling technologies

  5. Drive financial support to the caloric cooling industry, including but not limited to catalytic capital, public-private partnerships, grant funding and strategic corporate investment

Next steps

NaturalRefrigerants.com met with the CEOs of the three founding companies at Chillventa 2026 to discuss the launch of the SCC and better understand its plans. Timur Sirman, the CEO and Co-Founder of Magnotherm, noted that one of the initial goals is for the coalition’s members to better understand each other’s technologies to enable a common understanding of how the industry measures temperature, cooling capacity and efficiency “apples to apples.”

“We want this to be a trustworthy platform where we can explain the technologies we’re developing and the benefits we could bring to end users,” said Sirman.

Another task the coalition will tackle is establishing milestones for the emerging industry. Adam Slavney, CEO and Co-Founder of Pascal, said this entails first defining what a milestone is. That way, when it’s achieved, the SCC can broadcast that message to the HVAC&R industry and explain why it matters. An example is a company that has fully integrated its technology into a working system.

“There’s a lot that goes into taking your solid material and building the system around it in a way that allows you to get real power, temperature lift and efficiency,” said Slavney. “That’s a pretty big achievement in itself. It’s not all technical, though. We expect customer and commercial milestones, too.”

In addition to exchanging knowledge and unifying measurements, in the coming months the SCC will set up the rules and standards for admitting new members to the coalition. Companies interested in joining are invited to reach out to the Solid Cooling Coalition via its website.

“The SCC will help the larger industry get their head around us and what we represent to incorporate us into their plans so that we can reach a larger audience and grow our reach,” said Slavney.
