Carly’s CEO and Technical Director Detail the Design of the TURBOIL-R-P 14 Oil Separator for Transcritical CO2 Refrigeration Systems

The TURBOIL-R-P 14 recently received UL certification and will soon be available in the United States.


Cyrille Berthet, CEO of component manufacturer Carly, and the company’s Technical Director Jean-Français Bouteille, detailed the design of the TURBOIL-R-P 14 oil separator for transcritical CO2 (R744) refrigeration systems in a new video.

“The story of this oil separator is already old,” said Berthet. “The TURBOIL was created in 1998. This product is unique because we combined four different parameters to separate oil into one product: coalescence, molecular shock, helical separation and centrifugation, and speed reduction.”

As the market for transcritical CO2 refrigeration began to develop, Berthet said Carly began to determine how best to adapt TURBOIL for higher-pressure refrigeration systems. Rather than just tweak the system, the French components manufacturer decided to build a new model, the TURBOIL-R-P 14, with the “14” signifying its max rated working pressure of 140bar (2,030psi). The TURBOIL-R-P 14 recently received UL certification and will soon be made available in the U.S.

The TURBOIL-R-P 14 was designed to solve the problem of oil separation at part-load, in addition to at higher loads and full load. It has two oil separation chambers, one for filtering out larger oil particles and the other finer particles and metal. The two chambers are used in conjunction at up to 50% of the system’s nominal capacity, and beyond 50% the second chamber is bypassed.
