ATMOsphere Reapproves Fenagy’s Natural Refrigerants Label for Second Time

The ATMO Approved label is a global gold standard highlighting best-in-class manufacturers and contractors of natural refrigerant systems and components.

ATMOsphere, a global market accelerator of clean cooling and heating solutions and publisher of NaturalRefrigerants.com, has reapproved the ATMO Approved Natural Refrigerants Label for Fenagy, a Danish manufacturer specializing in CO2 (R744)-based heat pump systems.

This marks the second consecutive reapproval for Fenagy, initially certified in May 2023 and reapproved in February 2024.

“We’re excited to be reapproved by ATMOsphere as a best-in-class natural refrigerants company,” said Kim Christensen, Managing Director of Fenagy. “This recognition is a nod to the work we’re doing to drive climate-friendly solutions in heating and cooling.”

Launched in June 2022, the ATMO Approved label was created to offer a global benchmark for identifying leading manufacturers of natural refrigerant systems and components. In 2024, the label’s scope expanded to include contractors and installers, reflecting the growing need for excellence across the entire natural refrigerant sector.

In November 2024, ATMOsphere opened registration for the 2025 label, announcing the calculation of the amount of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) emissions avoided by certified companies through their natural refrigerant solutions. This addition aligns with recent research highlighting TFA as a “planetary boundary threat” due to its potential risks to human and environmental health.

Fenagy is the first company to be approved for the ATMO Approved label in 2025. Manufacturers and contractors that were approved for the Natural Refrigerants Label in 2024 were SURE Solutions, GTS, General Refrigeration, Secon, Güntner, Nihon Netsugen Systems, TEKO, Refra, M&M Carnot, Zero-C, Equans Kältetechnik, Zudek, SCM Frigo, Temprite, Ceptek, Novum and Vahterus.

Decarbonizing industry

Founded in 2020, Fenagy manufactures a range of CO2– and hydrocarbon-based chiller and heat pump systems. The company focuses on helping industries like industrial refrigeration and district heating transition to greener technologies.

“We see the impact every day – our systems are replacing gas and fossil fuels, offering a natural alternative to synthetic refrigerants that harm the environment,” explained Christensen. “There’s huge potential in the energy market for natural refrigerant heat pumps, not least in combined setups where waste heat from cooling processes is used for heating. We’re focused on making this potential a reality, and the ATMO Approved label supports our vision for a sustainable energy future.”

Fenagy’s CO2 heat pumps have demonstrated their versatility in diverse applications, including Copenhagen’s district heating and cooling networks and a Danish water park. In 2024, the company launched a water-to-water isobutane (R600a) heat pump, which was named Innovation of the Year/Heat Pump at the ATMO Awards/Europe. This unit delivers hot water up to 95°C (203°F) with optimal performance up to 1200kW (341TR), making it ideal for energy sector and industrial applications.

Last year, Danish utility provider TLV Forsyning installed two of Fenagy’s CO2-based H1800 air-to-water heat pumps at a district heating facility.

“After eight months of operation, we have found that the heat pump solution from Fenagy outperforms expectations in all scenarios,” said Peter Vestereng, Technical Project Manager at TLV Forsyning. “The heat pumps handle 100% of our load year-round. Fenagy will be invited to bid on future projects at TLV, and we would have no concerns if they were to win the tender.”

Best-in-class certification

The ATMOsphere label is designed to help qualified manufacturers and contractors to market products and services to new customers and regions in the natural refrigerants marketplace. Certified organizations can display the label on products, marketing materials, email signatures and trade show booths, boosting their visibility and helping end users identify best-in-class suppliers.

“The label will be very visible in the global marketplace, and companies can take advantage of this to strengthen their brand,” noted Chasserot. “By being global and multi-application, this label can help to create trust across new applications and regions. We want this multi-year label process to help move the market to cleaner solutions with natural refrigerant solutions over time.”

To qualify, companies must demonstrate excellence across four pillars:

  1. Company vision – a commitment to natural refrigerants as a core business.
  2. Customer satisfaction – positive end-user testimonials confirming reliability and performance.
  3. Measurable impact – mitigation of CO2 and TFA emissions.
  4. Proactive training – investment in employee and stakeholder education.

“We feel that, as an independent player with a global mindset and a global presence across all natural refrigerants and multiple applications, we are very well suited to provide this level of approval for the label,” explained Chasserot.

ATMOsphere has been active in the natural refrigerant space for nearly 20 years, producing dozens of market reports, publishing thousands of news articles, hosting more than 60 international conferences and attending hundreds of trade shows during this time.

Addressing PFAS concerns

A notable addition to the label criteria in recent years is the focus on eliminating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including TFA, which is formed from the atmospheric breakdown of certain HFO and HFC refrigerants. Research has linked TFA to environmental accumulation and potential health risks, including reproductive toxicity and liver dysfunction in animal studies.

“The label criteria around PFAS acknowledges what companies are doing to ensure they are PFAS-free,” Chasserot said. “ATMO Approved companies have the vision and leadership required to navigate the market today and help [companies] move away from PFAS and global-warming synthetic alternatives.”

In October 2024, Fenagy, along with ATMOsphere, Secon, TEKO, Konvekta, Refra and Güntner, founded the Coalition for PFAS Free Cooling and Heating. The initiative advocates for natural refrigerants as sustainable alternatives to PFAS in HVAC&R systems and supports an ambitious European PFAS regulation.
