TEKO Completes Delivery of 2.9MW CO2 Refrigeration System for German Food Processor Kampsen & Co

The system supports three zones: 980kW at −8°C evaporation, 260kW at −30°C and 1.86MW of blast chilling capacity at −20°C

Working with contracting partner Kreutzträger Kältetechnik, TEKO Refrigeration has delivered an approximately 2.9MW (824.6TR) CO2 (R744) refrigeration system for German meat-processing and convenience-food manufacturer Kampsen & Co’s Cloppenburg facility.

The refrigeration expansion, which began in mid-2018, is expected to be fully commissioned by the end of 2026, TEKO told NaturalRefrigerants.com. The TEKO CO2 equipment, including the company’s Roxsta 2.0 and Roxsta G6 compressor racks, supports three temperature zones for storage and processing, including 980kW (278.7TR) of medium-temperature (MT) refrigeration at −8°C (18°F) evaporation, 260kW (73.9TR) of low-temperature (LT) refrigeration at −30°C (−22°F) evaporation and 1.86MW (582.9TR) of blast chilling capacity at −20°C (−4°F) evaporation.

“This project is a strong confirmation that large-scale, transcritical CO2 systems have matured into a fully reliable solution for demanding industrial applications,” TEKO told NaturalRefrigerants.com. “Delivering 12 systems with 72 compressors and 2.9 MW of cooling capacity for a single site shows that natural refrigerants can meet even the highest requirements in scale, redundancy and operational safety.”

Additional design details: Heat recovery from the CO2 refrigeration system will provide 960kW of heating capacity.

  • Recovered waste heat will primarily generate warm brine for defrosting freezing equipment and MT and LT systems. It will also preheat the facility’s process water.
  • Nine tanks, with a combined capacity of 19m3 (671ft3), will provide thermal storage, TEKO noted.

The facility: The investment nearly doubled Kampsen’s production space from 13,000 to 25,000m2 (139,900 to 269,100ft2) and added a 10,000m2 (107,600ft2) logistics center.

  • Kampsen chose CO2 refrigeration over an equivalent ammonia (R717)-based system because it faced fewer regulatory and safety requirements and lower total installation costs, according to TEKO.
  • In addition, since it uses a non-halogenated refrigerant, the CO2 system qualifies for funding under the German Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA)’s Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Directive. The program provides up to €150,000 ($173,000) for eligible refrigeration investments, with funding based on capacity and performance.
  • “This project is a testament to what long-term, trust-based partnerships – in this case with Kreutzträger Kältetechnik – can achieve when technology, engineering and execution work hand in hand,” TEKO said.

Other markets: TEKO is also expanding its CO2 refrigeration presence in North and South America.

  • Working with its sister company, Canadian manufacturer Vitalis, a Pennsylvania food-processing plant recently installed an 185kW (52.7TR) transcritical CO₂ (R744) Roxsta G6 compressor rack for blast freezing steamed dumplings at −42°C (−44°F).
  • In fall 2025 TEKO Americas, a joint venture with Colombian manufacturer Weston, commissioned a 186kW (52.9TR) CO2 system for a new 31,600m2 (340,100ft2) Alkosto hypermarket in Bogotá. The system provides 162kW (46.1TR) of MT and 24kW (6.8TR) of LT cooling capacity.

Quotable: “Projects like Kampsen & Co. KG demonstrate that CO2 is no longer a niche or ‘green’ alternative but a proven, future-proof standard for industrial refrigeration at scale,” TEKO said. “It sends a clear signal to other end users considering the switch: natural refrigerant systems of this size and complexity are not only technically feasible but are already being successfully implemented.”
