Swedish manufacturer Alfa Laval will launch three new heat exchangers at Chillventa 2024, one for propane (R290) systems, one for CO2 (R744) and one for ammonia (R717), the company told NaturalRefrigerants.com.

Alfa Laval provides products and engineering designs for heat transfer, separation and fluid handling for numerous industries, including HVAC&R, power plants and wastewater treatment.

Chillventa, held biennially, is taking place October 8‒10 at the NürnbergMesse exhibition center in Nuremberg, Germany. The exhibition showcases HVAC, refrigeration and heat pump technologies.

New products: Alfa Laval has developed new heat exchangers for use in residential, commercial and industrial applications.

  • SE series: As a brazed heat exchanger, the SE series meets flammability standards for use with propane heat pumps and air-conditioning systems in residential and commercial applications. “They offer exceptionally high thermal efficiency and maximum performance with a minimal refrigerant charge,” said Malgorzata Moczynska, President of Business Unit Brazed and Fusion Bonded Heat Exchangers at Alfa Laval.
  • AC900: As a single-circuit brazed heat exchanger, the AC900 provides a compact CO2 system alternative to shell-and-tube units for capacities up to 600kW (171TR), Alfa Lavel told NaturalRefridgerants.com. “It features an extra-large gas outlet port and DynaStatic distributor system, making it suitable for small-to-medium capacity chillers with screw compressors, heat pumps and industrial chillers,” the company said.
  • Semi-welded plate: Alfa Laval said this renewed series supports industrial ammonia heat pumps and chillers, with customizable solutions available for larger capacities. “[The units] can meet specific water quality, pressure and temperature requirements, with proven gaskets available for every application,” the company told NaturalRefrigerants.com

Sustainable cities initiative: According to Alfa Laval, cities consume two-thirds of global energy and produce 70% of carbon emissions. Several speakers from the company will give presentations at the Chillventa Forum on how their products are helping drive sustainability in cities across Europe.

  • “Our focus will be on showcasing heat exchanger solutions for domestic, commercial and industrial heat pumps being transformative solutions to significantly reduce energy consumption and CO2e emissions,” Tommy Ångbäck, Alfa Laval’s Senior Global Sales Director,  told NaturalRefrigerants.com. “Heat pumps are pivotal in creating the energy-efficient and environmentally friendly cities of tomorrow.”

Presentations at Chillventa: The company invites attendees to visit booth 6-138 in hall 6 to “participate in hands-on workshops.” Ångbäck will be on hand with Claes Ericsson, Head of Equipment Sales, and Fabian Schega, Energy Division Manager for the DACH region, to discuss product applications, Alfa Laval told NaturalRefrigerants.com. In addition, the company will participate in five presentations at the event.

  • Ångbäck will outline Alfa Laval’s newly developed technology for its plate heat exchangers.
  • Matteo Todescato, Application and Product Specialist, will discuss the new SE series design, which allows for product use with propane evaporators and condensers.
  • Christian Kempe, Product and Application Development Manager HVAC/Light Industry/Refrigeration, will outline safety considerations for ammonia systems.
  • Georg Wörner, MidEurope Sales Manager, will present a case study detailing a three-heat-pump cascade system installed at a dairy processing company.
  • Ängback will also present an industrial heat pump application using semi-welded heat exchangers for heat recovery at a Danish data center.

Quotable: “The ability to make the most of what we have is more important than ever,” said Ångbäck. “Together with our customers, we’re innovating the industries that society depends on and we’re decarbonizing the marine fleet that’s the backbone of global trade.”
