French HVAC&R component manufacturer Carly has announced plans to invest in expanding its CO2 (R744) portfolio in response to rising demand for natural refrigerants.

Speaking at the Chillventa 2024 trade show, which took place in Nuremberg, Germany, October 8–10, Cyrille Berthet, Carly’s CEO, outlined the company’s strategic priorities for the coming years.

According to Berthet, oil control management will be a major focus for the company over the next two years. Another priority is ensuring that Carly’s entire product line achieves G1 and G2 compliance, critical for compatibility with various refrigerants and safety standards.

“There is a lot of work to do, and we have many ideas,” Berthet said. “Regarding G1 and G2 labeling, this is something we expect to have fully implemented before Chillventa 2026.”

Advancing filter dryer technology

A highlight of Carly’s Chillventa presentation was the introduction of its new solid-core filter dryer range, designed specifically for transcritical CO2 systems. Launched earlier this year, this line represents a significant innovation for the company, marking its first filter dryer with a core made entirely of 100% molecular sieve material.

“That is the big difference between this new range and our existing traditional filter dryers,” he explained.

The new design emphasizes enhanced water absorption and targets OEM applications, reflecting its origins as a custom product for a prominent manufacturer. The filter dryers are engineered for working pressures of 90–140bar (1,305–2,030psi), making them suitable for high-pressure applications in CO2 systems.

‘Innovative’ oil separators

Carly also showcased its TURBOIL-R-P14 oil separators, which garnered significant attention at Chillventa. This line has been expanded to accommodate larger capacities, noted Berthet.

“We are now offering a complete range of oil separators, which are really considered to be 100% innovative,” he said.

Designed for low-temperature CO2 applications, the TURBOIL-R-P14 operates at working pressures of up to 140bar and temperatures as high as 160°C (320°F). Carly claims the unit achieves up to 99.5% efficiency across all operating speeds, offering exceptional performance for demanding systems.

Eliminating vibrations

Carly’s commitment to natural refrigerants extends beyond CO2, with the recent launch of VIBRASTOP, a vibration eliminator designed specifically for propane (R290) systems.

With propane’s flammability posing unique challenges, VIBRASTOP mitigates vibration from compressors, reducing the risk of refrigerant leaks, Berthet explained. Crafted entirely from stainless steel, the product combines durability with flexibility, reflecting Carly’s dedication to “top quality” solutions for natural refrigerants, he added.
