Italy-based HVAC&R manufacturer Enex Technologies has launched two new CO2 (R744) products, including the Senna XtraSmart (XS) transcritical booster for retail applications and the Kube subcritical rack for industrial processes.

According to the manufacturer, cost estimates are available on both units. The company accepts orders for the Kube now and will start taking orders for the Senna XS in February.

“[We] plan to launch one new product every month,” said Enex, as part of an initiative to provide efficient natural refrigerant solutions. Besides CO2-based equipment, the company offers HVAC&R products using ammonia (R717), propane (R290) and water (R718) refrigerants.

Senna XS: The CO2 booster offers nominal medium-temperature (MT) cooling capacities from 50‒400kW (14.2‒113.7TR) and low-temperature (LT) from 8‒150kW (2.8‒42.7TR).

  • According to Enex, the unit has room for up to six MT compressors and five LT ones in a compact design, making it “ideal” for retrofit applications.
  • Configuration options include liquid and vapor ejectors, parallel compression, permanent magnet compression and a monobloc plug-and-play unit.

Kube rack: The CO2 subcritical unit offers cooling capacities from 10‒270kW (2.8‒76.8TR) with options for brine, refrigerant and water cooling.

  • “Ideal for retail, food processing or other industrial applications, [the unit works] with an existing water or brine loop or in cascade with high stage R290 or A2L to achieve outstanding performance, especially in warm climates,” Enex says on its website.

Focus on NatRefs: Having worked with natural refrigerants since the 1930s, Enex Technologies seeks to offer sustainable solutions without the threats posed by f-gases, according to Greg Deldicque, company Founder and Chairman.

  • Under its umbrella, Enex Technologies incorporates nine companies, including the Italy-based Emicon Group, manufacturers of commercial propane equipment, and EOS Refrigeration Equipment, a Spain-based producer of ammonia chillers.
  • Last spring, the company announced investing €6 million ($6.2 million) in a new research lab focused on ammonia, CO2, propane and water refrigerants. It claims the facility will be the only European research lab dedicated to four natural refrigerants.

Quotable: “For Enex Technologies, the question is not if HVAC&R equipment should use F-gas or natural refrigerants but the best natural option for each application,” Deldicque told NaturalRefrigerants.com. “This is why we have developed a full offering of CO2, ammonia, propane and water solutions.”
