Beijer Ref has acquired Refra, a Lithuanian manufacturer of chillers, refrigeration systems and heat pumps using natural refrigerants.

The Sweden-based Beijer Ref said it has acquired 90% of Refra, which it said has an annual turnover of approximately SEK 500 million (€45 million/$52 million). Refra was founded in 1994 in Vilnius and began manufacturing heating and refrigeration systems using natural refrigerants in 2011. Today its offerings include transcritical CO2 (R744) racks and hydrocarbon heat pumps and chillers.

“As demand for natural refrigerant solutions continues to grow, this acquisition enhances our offering and creates opportunities to leverage our global sales network,” said Joel Davidsson, acting CEO and CFO of Beijer Ref, in a statement. “We look forward to working closely with the existing management team to build on the company’s strong market position.”

Beijer Ref owns a wide variety of HVAC companies, including SCM Frigo and Fenagy, which specialize in natural refrigerant-based refrigeration systems and heat pumps, respectively.

“Becoming part of Beijer Ref marks an important milestone for Refra and a natural next step in our development,” said Aleksej Pavšukov, CEO of Refra, in a statement. “By combining our experience with Beijer Ref’s global reach, we will be able to expand our business further and pursue new opportunities while continuing to deliver the solutions and service our customers and partners know us for.”

While Europe is the main market for natural refrigerants, Refra has shown itself willing to move into new markets. In early 2025 the company announced a partnership with Hussmann Australia, with the latter distributing the former’s CO2 racks and propane (R290) chillers. At Chillventa 2024 the company debuted a CO2/propylene (R1270) designed for the Middle East, with the propylene sub cooling the CO2 to ensure the system runs in subcritical mode even in high ambient temperatures.

“As demand for natural refrigerant solutions continues to grow, this acquisition enhances our offering and creates opportunities to leverage our global sales network.”
