Magnotherm has announced Stellar, a new refrigerant-free magnetic cooling system with a max capacity of 125kW (35.5TR) designed for both commercial refrigeration and commercial HVAC.

Timur Sirman, CEO and Co-Founder of Magnotherm, shared the news about Stellar in a LinkedIn post, writing that the company is currently seeking technical, commercial and financial partners to “help support the next steps.” Stellar is not commercially available but Magnotherm is seeking partners for joint development projects.

The new system is modular and can be installed indoors or outside and has near “silent operation,” according to the company. It’s also designed to be compact, with two modules providing 250kW (71TR) of cooling capacity requiring only a 20ft (6.1m) container.

Stellar works using the magnetocaloric effect where some materials heat up when exposed to a magnetic field and then cool down when the field is removed. Magnotherm uses lanthanum-iron-silicon as its material, with permanent magnets used to generate the magnetic field. Magnotherm says that while permanent magnets work for lower-capacity systems, superconducting magnets are needed for higher capacities.

High-temperature superconductors have recently become more widely available – and affordable – thanks to advancements in fusion technology, Sirman wrote. The capacity gain from superconducting magnets isn’t linear, with Magnotherm stating that the cooling power density is over 100 times greater at 5 Tesla than 1 Tesla, a unit of measurement for the strength of a magnetic field.

“Data centers consuming less energy to cool, with no reliance on local water supply,” said Sirman. “Manufacturing lines with indoor installation and no refrigerant management burden. Buildings with safe, silent infrastructure fit for human habitation.”

Track record

In April, Magnotherm announced that its Eclipse cabinets would be installed in REWE supermarkets in Germany. The retailer planned to bring in 10 to 20 cabinets in 2026, which provide up to 0.6kW (0.17TR) of cooling capacity.

The rollout followed an 11-week in-store pilot study of a 0.4kW (0.11TR) Eclipse cabinet. The retailer found that the magnetic caloric unit used 15% less energy than incumbent propane (R290) cases, while maintaining the 4‒5°C (39–41°F) target temperature, Sirman said in a presentation at the ATMOsphere (ATMO) Europe Summit 2025.
