Ideal Heating, a U.K. boiler manufacturer, has recently expanded its ECOMOD 290HT air-to-water propane (R290) commercial heat pump line with a new 65kW (18.4TR) model.

The new heat pump has a maximum flow temperature of 70°C (158°F) and a COP of up to 4.6. It brings the company’s ECOMOD 290HT line to include four chassis sizes and six outputs, ranging from 15 to 65kW (4.2 to 18.4TR).

“Investing further in our ECOMOD heat pump range, including our latest natural refrigerant models, enables us to provide an even wider range of outputs to meet the changing needs of our customers,” said Chris Caton, Product Director – Commercial at Ideal Heating, in a statement.

The unit integrates with other Ideal Commercial Heating products, such as condensing boilers, to “create efficient, low-carbon hybrid heating solutions.” In this context, hybrid heating refers to a system that integrates a heat pump with a supplementary gas-condensing boiler which activates during periods of high demand or low temperatures.

The previous generation ECOMOD 290HT, launched in 2024, supports 75°C (167°F) hot water along with a CO2 (R744) monobloc offering 70°C hot water. Just like its latest iteration, the older unit can be installed in cascade configurations of up to seven devices.

An increasingly crowded market

The new Ideal Heating R290 commercial heat pumps are entering an increasingly crowded market. In January, Italian manufacturer Clivet announced two new air-to-water reversible heat pumps, part of its Edge Pro series, with capacities of 25 and 30kW (7.1 and 8.5TR) for light commercial and centralized residential use.

In October 2025, Aermec UK entered the natural refrigerants market with two reversible propane heat pumps. The PRM is a modular air-cooled unit that delivers cooling and heating capacities of 95.6kW (27.2TR) and 101.7kW (28.9TR), respectively. The PRG is an air-to-water heat pump range with cooling capacities of 49.4–143.4kW (14–40.8TR) and heating capacities of 51–142.8kW (14.5–40.6TR).

These product releases have coincided with some notable news from end users. In January 2026,  Viessmann Climate Solutions, part of Carrier Global Corporation, announced that the organisation would provide residential and commercial R290 heat pumps to Procure Plus. Procure Plus works in procurement for the U.K.’s social housing sector, and Viessmann and Carrier are part of a £1.6 billion ($2.15 billion/€1.85 billion) social housing decarbonization program.

In June 2025, the Radisson Hotel Group announced that it had installed four propane air-to-water 120HP heat pumps produced by Carrier in its Manchester, England, City Center Hotel as part of its first net-zero retrofit. The heat pumps are used for domestic hot water production and are AquaSnap 61AQ models, a line of reversible R290 monobloc heat pumps released by the HVAC&R manufacturer, part of Carrier Global Corporation, in February 2024. The units provide outlet temperatures of up to 75°C (167°F) in ambient conditions as low as −7°C (19.4°F) and operate “efficiently” in temperatures as low as −25°C (−13°F), the manufacturer said.
