Dick Yi, Sales Manager of Chinese Foshan LYD Energy Saving Technology, highlighted examples of the company’s CO2 (R744) heat pumps installed in Europe, North America and Oceania in an exclusive interview with NaturalRefrigerants.com.

LYD installed its first CO2 heat pump in 2015 to generate domestic hot water in a Chinese hotel. Today, the company manufactures air-to-air, air-to-water and water-to-water CO2 units for commercial and industrial applications. Depending on the configuration, heating capacities range from 8kW to 1MW (2.3 to 284.3TR).

European installations: Yi outlined three projects in the region: one each in Hungary, Switzerland and Germany.

  • The company’s first project in Europe was in 2021 in Hungary. Through its partner RVS Energy, a local distributor, LYD provided 20 air-source units with CE certification for domestic hot water and comfort heating.
  • In 2024, LYD supplied two combined air- and water-source heat pumps to a photovoltaic factory in Switzerland. The units provide cooling in summer and heating in winter. “The manufacturing floor is always hot,” Yi said, adding that the system recovers heat from the workshop and supplies it to the office.
  • In 2024, LYD supplied two complete air-source heat pump racks, minus the compressors, for installation in a German combined heat and power plant supporting a district heating network. The local OEM installed a German-built compressor to meet government requirements, Yi said, adding that the system is under testing.

In North America: The company has CO2 heat pump installations in the U.S. and Mexico.

  • “We’ve sold 250 CO2 heat pumps to our U.S. partner, Yi said, adding that the manufacturer incorporates the air-source units into its water heating solution.
  • Yi added that LYD is currently seeking UL certification with its U.S. partner for its air-source heat pumps and plans to introduce them in the North American market in 2026 through its partner.

Australia and New Zealand: LYD aims to complete equipment testing soon as part of its efforts to qualify under the Australian heat exchanger standard, Yi noted.

  • In 2022, LYD supplied four water-source heat pumps for domestic heating and waste heat recovery in an Australian project through its partner Automatic Heating. The Australian manufacturer/contractor also sources CO2 hot water heat pumps from Japan-based Itomic.
  • Working with a New Zealand partner, LYD has supplied 30 air-source small 8 and 14kW (2.3 and 4TR) CO2 heat pumps to the country for use in the dairy industry. The units produce 85°C (185°F) hot water for sanitation.
