Typhon Technologies, a Danish manufacturer of sensors and switches for industrial and commercial refrigeration equipment and heat pumps, is piloting a “breakthrough” feature for ammonia (R717)-based refrigeration systems, CEO and Co-Founder Martin Mozart Ernst told NaturalRefrigerant.com.

Typhon Technologies was founded in 2018 and has been developing sensors for ammonia (R717) and CO₂ (R744) refrigeration and heat pumps since the last quarter of 2023, according to Mozart Ernst. The new product is designed to address oil buildup in standpipes in ammonia systems.

“This complete, patent-pending solution is currently being tested in a pilot project in Denmark where it has shown excellent results over the past several months,” Mozart Ernst said.

In addition to the new product, Mozart Ernst spoke about the emerging trends Typhon Technologies is seeing in the market for liquid level switches and sensors, what guides its product development and why the company decided to join the NaturalRefrigerants.com Marketplace as a silver partner.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

What markets does Typhon Technologies primarily serve, and where does it see the most growth?

Martin Mozart Ernst: Typhon Technologies primarily serves the refrigeration and heat pump sectors, with a strong focus on industrial and commercial applications. Our sensor solutions are designed to meet the demands of next-generation systems using natural refrigerants, such as ammonia and CO₂.

Typhon Technologies is currently most active in Europe where adoption of sustainable refrigerants is accelerating. However, we are also seeing significant interest and growth opportunities in North America and Asia, especially in regions transitioning to low-GWP refrigerant technologies.

Looking ahead, we see the most growth potential in natural refrigerant systems, particularly ammonia and CO₂, heat pumps for industrial and commercial buildings, and OEM partnerships seeking smart, integrated and cost-efficient sensor platforms. With our patent-pending technologies and modular sensor design, we’re well-positioned to support the industry’s shift toward more efficient and environmentally friendly HVAC&R solutions.

Typhon Technologies describes itself as a “technology development company.” What new product for natural refrigerant-based systems are you currently working on?

MME: Typhon Technologies is currently finalizing a new breakthrough feature for ammonia systems that addresses a well-known industry challenge: oil buildup in standpipes, which often leads to inaccurate liquid level readings.

We have successfully developed a solution that not only detects the presence of oil in the standpipe but also provides this as a secondary mA output while actively compensating for the oil in the main level measurement. Additionally, our system integrates temperature compensation by measuring the temperature directly in the refrigerant medium, ensuring even greater accuracy under varying operating conditions.

This complete, patent-pending solution is currently being tested in a pilot project in Denmark where it has shown excellent results over the past several months. Based on the success of this pilot, we are working to integrate these features as standard functionality in our upcoming line of level sensors for natural refrigerants.

“Our next-generation sensors integrate oil detection, temperature compensation and wireless configuration – all within a compact and energy-efficient design.”

What is a current or emerging trend in liquid level sensors or switches for natural refrigerant systems that you’re keeping an eye on?

MME: One of the most important emerging trends in liquid level sensors for natural refrigerant systems is the shift toward smart, multi-functional sensors that directly support the global transition to low-GWP refrigerants – particularly ammonia and CO₂.

As environmental regulations tighten and phase downs of synthetic refrigerants accelerate, system designers and operators are under increasing pressure to optimize performance, minimize emissions and increase energy efficiency. This is driving demand for advanced sensors that not only monitor liquid level but also:

  • Compensate for oil and temperature fluctuations in real time
  • Support predictive maintenance through digital diagnostics
  • Enable quick, error-free commissioning via Bluetooth or wireless configuration
  • Offer universal compatibility across natural refrigerants to reduce system complexity and waste

We’re developing sensor solutions that directly address these needs. Our next-generation sensors integrate oil detection, temperature compensation and wireless configuration – all within a compact and energy-efficient design. This not only improves measurement accuracy and system reliability but also supports our customers’ broader sustainability goals by reducing leakage risk, improving operational efficiency and extending equipment lifespan.

We see regulatory compliance and environmental performance becoming inseparable from sensor technology choices and we’re actively aligning our innovations with that future.

Why did Typhon Technologies decide to partner with NaturalRefrigerants.com?

MME: Typhon Technologies partnered with NaturalRefrigerants.com because of their strong commitment and deep expertise in promoting natural refrigerant solutions across the HVAC&R industry. This partnership aligns perfectly with our mission to accelerate the adoption of environmentally friendly, low-GWP refrigerant technologies.

By working together, we can combine Typhon’s cutting-edge sensor innovations with NaturalRefrigerants.com’s market reach and educational resources to better support customers transitioning to sustainable refrigeration and heat pump systems. Ultimately, the partnership helps both organizations advance regulatory compliance, technology innovation and industry best practices – all critical to driving the global shift toward safer, cleaner refrigeration technologies.
