Rhoss Launches Two New R290 Heat Pump Ranges

Both ranges offer roughly the same 48–190kW heating capacities, but the POKER-PI uses inverter technology and the POKER-P on/off.

Italian-based HVAC manufacturer Rhoss has released two new reversible air-to-water propane (R290) heat pump ranges ‒ the POKER-PI with an inverter scroll compressor and the POKER-P with an on/off scroll compressor.

According to Rhoss, the POKER-P is a “technical upgrade” of the company’s first natural refrigerant product, the POKERR290 range, launched in May 2023 and showcased at ISH 2023.

Both new ranges come in one modular size with the ability to couple up to four units through a Rhoss Dynamic Sequencer (SDR) to provide “sequenced management of domestic hot water production,” Rhoss said.

POKER-PI specifications: “This new product expands [heat pump] offerings with natural fluorine-free refrigerant for new installations [and] building renovations with integration or total replacement of existing heating systems, including gas boilers,” Rhoss said.

  • According to the product’s technical data sheet, the nominal heating capacities between the one- and four-unit configurations of the POKER-PI range from 47.8–190.9kW (13.6–54.3TR), with water temperatures as high as 80°C (176°F) and up to 60°C (140°F) in ambient temperatures down to −20°C (−4°F).
  • The up-to-four-unit configuration provides nominal cooling capacities ranging from 41.8–166.3kW (11.9–47.3TR), with a set cold water temperature between −10 and 20°C (14 and 68°F) in ambient temperatures up to 50°C (122°F).
  • The unit offers a low-temperature SCOP of up to 4.52 and a medium-temperature SCOP of up to 3.72.
  • The single refrigeration circuit operates with a single inverter compressor at a “low noise” level of 79dB(A).

POKER-P specifications: According to Rhoss, as part of upgrading its existing POKER290 heat pump, the POKER-P comes in an “aesthetic redesigned” module, with improvements for unit handling and accessibility to the technical compartment.

  • According to the product’s technical data sheet, the nominal heating capacities between the one- and four-unit configurations of the POKER-P range from 47.4–190.5kW (13.5–54.2TR).
  • “The new unit extends the operating limits, allowing it to now produce up to 75°C [167°F] hot water in ambient temperature down to 0°C [32°F],” Rhoss said. When the company released the POKERR290, it reported that it provided 65°C (149°F) hot water at ambient temperatures down to −12°C (10.4°F).
  • The up-to-four-unit configuration provides nominal cooling capacities ranging from 44.8–178.3kW (12.7–50.7TR).
  • According to the manufacturer, new pumps on the POKER-P optimize performance, giving it a low-temperature SCOP of up to 3.83.
  • Using a single refrigeration circuit, the double compressor (fixed speed) on/off configuration of the POKER-P operates at a “low noise” level of 76dB(A).

Features in common: The PORKER-PI and the POKER-P share the same “optimized structure” design, incorporating a leak detector and ventilation system for propane refrigerant’s A3 flammability rating, Rhoss noted.

  • The dimensions of each module are 1224 × 2335 × 1320mm (4 × 7.7 × 4.3ft).
  • “[Both come with] desuperheater DS management in standard or economy mode to enhance the global efficiency of the unit,” Rhoss said.
  • A 3-way diverting valve comes as an option for domestic hot water production.
  • Each module comes with a contact for smart grid integration, with a photovoltaic system as an optional accessory.

Quotable: Swedish HVAC manufacturer Nibe acquired Rhoss in 2019. “Becoming part of this international group gave us new energy to grow in research and development and technology, renewing our enthusiasm and commitment for the challenges of tomorrow,” Rhoss says on its website.

“This new product expands [heat pump] offerings with natural fluorine-free refrigerant for new installations [and] building renovations.”
