NIBE’s Propane Heat Pump Wins ‘Build It’ Award for Best Heating Product of 2022

The Swedish manufacturer’s air-source S2125 heat pump can provide temperatures of up to 75°C and has a seasonal COP of 5.0.

Swedish manufacturer NIBE’s propane (R290)-based, air-to-water S2125 heat pump has won the Best Heating System or Product award at the 2022 “Build It” Awards, which recognize “innovation and excellence” in the custom and self-build home sector.

The winners of the awards, given in association with U.K.-based BuildStore, a supplier of support and services for individual homebuilders, were announced at a ceremony in London on November 25, 2022.

High temperatures at high efficiency

According to NIBE, the S2125 is one of the most efficient air-source heat pump products on the market, with a seasonal COP of 5.0.

The heat pump, which is available in two models – S2125-8 and S2125-12 – can supply temperatures of up to 75°C (167°F). At an ambient temperature of -25°C (-13°F), it can provide up to 65°C (149°F), the manufacturer says.

The S2125-8 model has a heating capacity of 2.95kW (0.8TR) when supplying 45°C (113°F) at an ambient temperature of 2°C (35.6°F), while the larger S2125-12 can provide 3.46kW (0.8TR) heating capacity in the same conditions.

The reversible heat pump can also provide humidity-controlled cooling, offering 6.69kW (1.9TR) of cooling when supplying 7°C (44.6°F) at an ambient temperature of 35°C (95°F).

In addition to supplying high temperatures at high levels of efficiency, NIBE’s S2125 heat pump produces very little sound to “ensure minimum disruption to customers,” the manufacturer said.

Heat pump training

NIBE’s award-winning S2125 heat pump was also recently showcased at the reopening of the company’s Heat Pump Training Academy in Chesterfield, U.K., on December 9, 2022.

The newly refurbished center will provide training for much-needed heat pump installers as the industry gears up for the growing demand for the low-carbon technology.

For the U.K. to meet its net-zero targets, at least 600,000 air-to-water heat pumps systems will need to be installed each year by 2028, explained NIBE. To support this roll-out, more than 50,000 installers will be needed by 2030, it added.

According to the European Heat Pump Association, the U.K. had the lowest installation rate of heat pumps in 2021.

In addition to offering NIBE Pro training courses, the academy will also provide comprehensive installation, commissioning and service and maintenance courses.

“We’re really excited to reopen this flagship NIBE Training Academy,” said Phil Hurley, NIBE’s U.K. Managing Director. “We’ve been working hard to ensure the facility gives the best possible learning for installers so they can effectively and confidently install heat pumps right here in Chesterfield and across the U.K. We are looking forward to working with new and existing installers throughout their heat pump journey,” he added.

NIBE has also partnered with other training centers and colleges to further improve access to installer training across the country.
