Energy Recovery Welcomes Refrigeration Executive to Board of Directors

David Moon brings 25 years of commercial and industrial HVAC&R leadership, having worked for and advised several global companies, including Carrier Commercial Refrigeration.

Energy Recovery, a California-based manufacturer of pressure exchangers, has announced the appointment of refrigeration executive David Moon to its board of directors.

Moon brings 25 years of commercial and industrial HVAC&R leadership to the board, having worked for and advised several global food retail, food processing, cold storage and pharmaceuticals companies.

Moon’s experience includes Carrier Commercial Refrigeration – a division of Carrier Global Corporation and leading supplier of high-efficiency CO2 (R744) refrigeration systems in Europe and Asia – where he was President. In this role, Moon is said to have improved the company’s technological capabilities and built relationships with top food, pharmaceutical and logistics customers.

Prior to how work with Carrier, Moon was an independent advisor at Ares Management, focusing on acquisitions in the HVAC&R and building products markets, and a Board Member for CoolSys, the parent of HVAC&R services companies. He has also held multiple executive roles at Heatcraft Worldwide Refrigeration, Tenneco and AlliedSignal.

‘Extensive expertise’

Energy Recovery has also welcomed Colin Sabol to its board of directors, with his 20 years of experience in the global water and energy markets.

Innovation of the Year

Energy Recovery’s PX G1300 pressure exchanger is able to improve the efficiency of a transcritical CO2 system. It does this by harnessing the high-pressure CO2 fluid (liquid, gas or supercritical) coming from the gas cooler to increase the pressure of low-pressure suction gas coming from the evaporator and flash gas coming from the receiver. It then returns the now higher-pressure gas to the gas cooler instead of to the compressors, reducing the work required of the compressors. This reduces energy costs and lengthens the life of the compressors, reducing capex costs, the company says.

The device has been found to reduce the energy consumption of a Californian supermarket’s CO2 refrigeration system by 30%. It has also been found to increase the energy efficiency of CO2-based commercial refrigeration systems by up to 25% at an ambient temperature of around 37°C (98.6°F), compared to a standard CO2 booster system.

The PX G1300 was recently awarded Innovation of the Year/North America at the ATMOsphere (ATMO) America Summit 2023, which took place June 12–13 in Washington, D.C. ATMO America was organized by ATMOsphere, publisher of R744.com.
