ATMO Europe: TripleAqua CEO Says Dual-Mode CO2 Heat Pump Demonstrates ‘Game-Changing’ Performance

The heat pump had an energy efficiency ratio of 4.59 for cooling and a coefficient of performance of 4.59 for cooling under partial load.

A TripleAqua CO(R744) heat pump in a beverage cooler factory in the Czech Republic has recorded an energy efficiency ratio (EER) of 4.59 for cooling and a COP of 4.79 for heating at part-load conditions, according to Menno van der Hoff, CEO of TripleAqua.

Referring to the EER and COP figures, Van der Hoff stressed that the “figures are more than numbers” and show “the strides we’ve made in energy efficiency.” He noted the CO2 heat pump system’s ability to remain efficient under higher loads, calling its performance “a game-changer.”

The system has a thermal capacity of around 100kW (28.4TR) and provides heating and cooling to both the factory and on-site office space in the same building, which have a total area of 4,000m(43,055ft2). The beverage cooler factory is located in České Budějovice (Budweis), approximately two hours south of Prague, and is operated by Sinop CB.

Radek Hrabánek, Project Manager at Sinop, also touted the performance figures at medium-load conditions (typically higher demand than partial-load conditions).

“Here, the EER for cooling stands at 3.25,” said Hrabánek. “When the system operates in dual mode, the EER for cooling is 4.02, and the COP for heating is 4.29 at an outdoor temperature of 25°C [77°F].”

“The system’s dual functionality is noteworthy,” Hrabánek added. “The new R744 heat pump system provides heating and cooling to the factory and office and acts as a surplus heat source.”

Van der Hoff and Hrabánek shared details of the heat pump’s performance at the ATMOsphere (ATMO) Europe Summit 2023, held last September in Brussels and organized by ATMOsphere, publisher of R744.com.

Debut at Chillventa

The second-generation TripleAqua heat pump used in the project was launched at Chillventa 2022 in Nuremberg, Germany. The air-to-water heat pump has a heating capacity between 45 and 500kW (12.8 and 142.2TR). It can provide flow water temperatures ranging between 28 and 50°C (82.4 and 122°F) for space heating, over 80°C (176°F) for sanitary hot water and between 7 and 12°C (44.6 and 53.6°F) for cooling.

The installation of the heat pump at the Budweis beverage cooler factory began as a pilot project in 2021. The hardware and software underwent extensive testing from 2021 until 2023. The factory has an area of 2,900m(31,215 ft2)with an underfloor heating of 35W/m(376.4W/ft2) and cooling of 21W/m(226W/ft2).

Van der Hoff highlighted the system’s performance, mentioning the installation of various small and large fan coils installed throughout the factory.

“R744 technology in the TripleAqua system particularly leverages high differential temperatures [between the hot and cold sides], which is significant for the efficiency of our CO2 gas cooler,” Van der Hoff elaborated. In addition, the wide temperature range ensures “optimal thermal management while being energy efficient, especially in terms of pump usage.”
